Probing into the Workings of Climate with the IPRC Regional Climate Model

چکیده

General circulation models (GCMs) of the global atmosphere are a key tool for climate research. They represent atmospheric dynamics, physics, and chemistry with mathematical equations, which are then solved on a threedimensional grid that spans the globe. Computer capabilities currently limit the grid resolutions in the global GCMs that are used to simulate Earth’s climate and make warming predictions and that are integrated over several decades (such as those reviewed in the latest report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change). As a consequence, they have a longitudinal grid spacing of only about 300 km, which is insufficient to resolve many important features of the atmospheric circulation. To deal with this limitation, scientists are turning to regional atmospheric models. Covering a smaller region, the available computing power in such models can be applied to represent climate-related processes and their interactions with Earth’s geographic and vegetation features in finer detail.

Regional Climate Modeling: An Overview

Regional climate models are useful tools for regional climate research. They are especially helpful for studying the effects of topography, coastlines, and other complex landsurface properties on regional climate and for simulating these effects realistically. Although regional climate modeling started more than ten years ago, improvements in model physics and performance have been slow. There ...

Simulation of climate change in Iran during 2071-2100 using PRECIS regional climate modelling system

Parameters such as future precipitation, temperature, snowfall, and runoff were modeled using PRECIS regionalclimate modeling system in Iran with the horizontal resolutions of 0.44×0.44°C in latitude and longitude under SRESA2 and B2 scenarios. The dataset was based on HadAM3p during the periods of 1961-1990 and 2071-2100. Theoverall precipitation error of the model in the period of 1961-1990 w...
